Ankle Impingement Caused by an Intra-articular Plica: A Report of 2 Cases.

UNLABELLED: Entrapment of soft tissues in the anterolateral gutter of the ankle can cause impingement. When symptomatic, patients complain of chronic ankle pain exacerbated with dorsiflexion. Symptoms of instability and a history of recurring ankle sprains are common findings. Plain radiographs and magnetic resonance imaging may assist clinicians in identifying associated pathology. We present 2 cases of ankle impingement occurring in the setting of equivocal examination and imaging findings. In both cases, arthroscopy revealed a likely congenital, intra-articular plica.
